Farmstead Revival has worked on many exciting projects around The Flathead Valley as well as collaborate with local builders and landscape companies to help landowners bring their vision to reality. Here are some examples of past and current projects.
From the ground up. I have worked with the property owner, builder and landscape team to design a working vegetable farm complete with processing facility, state of the art greenhouse, hollistic orchard and pasture for animals.
A fully automated greenhouse for seed starting and nursery plants. This greenhouse will have a glass exterior to take advantage of the surrounding views and is further equipped with a climate battery to maximize efficiency and regulate temperatures.
After building an irrigation system for the 10 acre pasture, a diverse blend of cover crops were established. We then implemented a rotational grazing strategy utilizing sheep to help boost fertility, manage weeds and increase the soil organic matter.
Design and installation of a 50 fruit tree orchard. The holistic orchard approach seeks to maximize diversity, reduce pest and disease pressure and decrease reliance on outside inputs. The orchard floor has a diverse mix of cover crops while around the base of every tree there are other fruit and berry crops, medicinal herbs and companion plants designed to increase soil organic matter and beneficial insects.
Mountain side garden. The owners wanted to make this space more productive. Working with local landscape company we designed a terraced garden area and perennial flower/herb garden.
To level out the hillside, two rock walls were installed creating a terraced landscape ready for planting areas.
After building the terraces, we created permanent vegetable beds with a thick layer of compost. Garlic planted in one of the beds this fall. In the spring the rest of the beds will be planted, the lower terrace will be planted with perennial herbs and vegetables. There is also an upper orchard section of the property that will become a food forest full of fruit trees, berry plants and medicinal herbs.
